Do you want to know what a pregnant woman loves? She loves food. Specifically, a pregnant woman loves good, tummy filling food like pizza. Since I’m A) Pregnant and B) A lover of food I decided to try my cooking skills out on making a home made Hawaiian pizza.
Let me start off by saying that I am an ultimate MomHack and the queen of eating made easy. I like good food, prepared simply with very few steps all made with good, wholesome ingredients. The opportune word being easy. The fact that I attempted to make my own pizza dough from scratch is amazing. And surprisingly easy. Better yet, I went shopping for the #ChooseSmart ingredients at my local Smart & Final (hello! easy shopping!).
Moms like me prefer to shop at Smart & Final because it is a smaller, faster warehouse store. Yes, I know you’ve heard that slogan before but you know what? It’s true. You can get less expensive warehouse prices without the crowds and long line waits. Plus there’s always tons of staff on duty to lend you a hand. Or in my case, help hunt down my children before they knock over yet another food display.
To create my #CollectiveBias Hawaiian inspired pizza, I focused on using La Romanella ingredients which is an extensive brand across all kinds of products, easy to find and incredibly priced.
Now, I know you want to know exactly how to make your own made-from-scratch pizza dough. It was so easy and so inexpensive there’s no reason to ever purchase another expensive pre made pizza again. Seriously.
How To Make Home Made Pizza Dough:
- 1 teaspoon yeast
- 1½ teaspoon salt
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- ¾ cups warm water
- 2 cups flour
- Combine the yeast, sugar and warm water (not hot!) in a bowl. Stir well with a fork to dissolve the yeast and sugar. Allow the yeast sit for 3-5 minutes to let the yeast bloom. You’ll see a thick, bubbly foam on top when the yeast is ready.
- While the yeast is blooming – combine 2 cups of flour and salt in a large bowl. Stir well to evenly distribute the salt. Add the olive oil.
- Once the yeast water is foamy on top stir it into the flour mixture. Stir it with a spoon until it forms a loose, crummy ball. Dump the dough mixture out onto a clean, flat surface and begin to knead the dough.
- Knead well for 10 minutes. You can go ahead and consider this your workout for the day (I did). Sprinkle flour on the countertop sparingly as you knead. If you add too much flour the dough will end up thick and gross. You can use the dough the same day, use it the next day or you can freeze the dough.
- To use the dough the same day: Form the kneaded dough into a ball. Spray a bowl with non stick spray, place the dough inside and turn it to coat with oil. Cover the bowl loosely and let it rise in a warm place for one hour. After it has risen, punch it down to release some gasses and stretch it into a 16″ round.
- To use the kneaded dough the next day (better flavor): Form the dough into a ball and coat with oil place the dough in the refrigerator. The dough can be used up 8-24 hours later.
- To Freeze the dough for later: After forming it into a ball, coat it with oil, wrap tightly in plastic wrap then place in a freezer bag. When you are ready to use the dough, simply place it on the counter for one hour prior to use.
- When you’re ready to use the pizza dough: Let the dough become room temperature. Stretch the dough into shape, place it on a perforated pizza pan coated with non-stick spray and a light dusting of cornmeal.
- Top with your favorite pizza toppings.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are brown and crispy.
Bloomed yeast. In actuality since it was a chilly day when I made this pizza it took about 20 minutes for the yeast to bloom, not the 3-5 minutes as my recipe says. I was concerned my yeast was dead, but alas it was arozen and did some beautiful blooming for me.

Partly because my hands were busy and partly because I was annoyed at kneading for 10 minutes and my arms were getting tired and of course all the kids needed something and everyone started fighting and the doorbell rang and and and…
Other than the 10 minute kneading workout session, making home made pizza dough from scratch is super easy and super inexpensive.
Now on to the good part. The Toppings.
- 1/2 cup La Romanella fully prepared Pizza Sauce (that means it already has all the spices needed in it!)
- Hand full of La Romanella sandwich pepperoni (they’re bigger and flatter than any other pepperoni and they’re yummy delicious)
- 1/4 cup Pineapple (fresh or canned)
- 1/4 cup chunks of ham from a ham steak (not lunch meat)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
- Sprinkle of sliced green onions
- Spread out the La Romanella Pizza Sauce to 1/2 inch of pizza edge
- Top with cheese, ham, pineapple, sliced green onions and pepperoni (I folded the pepperoni in half).
- Place on pizza pan/stone
- Cook for 10-12 minutes in a pre heated 450 degree oven
- Eat and Enjoy!
