How To Achieve A Healthier Home With A Dehumidifier

September 22, 2014 By Desiree Eaglin

Have you been feeling sick a lot recently? Do you have a sniffly nose or itchy, watery eyes? You may not have a cold, you may have allergies! You may not realize this, but a reducing the moisture levels in your house has several health benefits. A dehumidifier is a vital home appliance for those who want to restore their home’s humidity levels and prevent allergy attacks. Many of us have quite high levels of humidity as a result of factors such as drying & washing inside and poor ventilation.

Mold
Moisture is the key factor in the growth of mold which can develop in damp areas like bathrooms and in places which suffer from condensation, such as windows. As well as being unsightly and potentially damaging your property people who suffer from sensitivity to mold may find that the presence of mold spores in the air can lead to irritation in the throat and eyes, coughing and other symptoms. It can also have a negative impact on those with asthma. Mold can cause more serious problems for those who have lung problems. A dehumidifier reduces the moisture in the air and thus removes the conditions necessary for mold to grow.

Allergies
Humidity in the air can also help to create the conditions needed for dust mites to thrive. Some unfortunate souls suffer allergic reactions from dust mites and they can also lead to problems for asthma sufferers. The mites live in moist, warm areas such as bedding and it is their skin secretions and feces which can trigger reactions (gross!) especially dust mites that infest in bed. You can’t entirely remove dust mites from your home but you can take action to make your house less attractive to them. For example, washing your bedding at a high temperature will kill dust mites. As the name suggests, the mites love dust so regular vacuuming will also help. Using a dehumidifier to reduce the moisture in the air will also turn your home into an environment less conducive to dust mites which will ultimately reduce the chances of you or your family suffering from allergic reactions.

As we have seen excess moisture in the air can encourage the growth of mold and contribute towards the creation of ideal conditions for dust mites. Both of these factors can have negative impacts on the health of you and your family so it’s well worth considering purchasing a dehumidifier. Reducing levels of moisture in the air can be beneficial to health by removing the conditions needed for mold and dust mites to thrive.
