Why Everyone Needs To See Moana

November 23, 2016 By Desiree Eaglin

Moana, a thoughtful and genuine coming of age story marks the 56th film out of the Walt Disney Animation Studios. Set in the South Pacific with great attention and care to truly represent the deep-rooted communities it portrays, this is a breathtaking film about a girl named Moana who sets sail across the ocean to find and restore the heart of Te Fiti to save her village.

The film is directed by the highly acclaimed duo- Ron Clements and John Musker of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules movie fame who made their writing and directing debut in 1986. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and new up-comer Auli’i Cravalho voice the two main characters of the film as the legendary demi-god Maui and Moana, the 16 year old adventurous teenager respectfully. The beat of the film and heart of the story is enhanced by music by Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame. The combination of the latest state-of-the-art computer generated animation, with classic directors and a voice cast that can embody the strength and empathy to carry the movie is absolutely magical to watch on screen.

The word Moana, which means “ocean” is the heroine of the story. She’s a smart and spunky teenager who has a deep connection to the ocean. Her father Tui, the chief of the village warns her to not go out past the reef. In true Disney form, this vivacious young woman has a loveable side kick named Pua, her pig whereas Hei Hei, the dumb chicken provides downright hilarious comedy. Gramma Tala serves as a guidance to Moana and provides great comfort to follow her soul. Lastly, there is Maui, the demi-god with a charming air of confidence…or is it ego?

Why Everyone Needs To See Moana

Coming of Age
I feel as though there can never be enough genuine coming of age stories. Moana for example not only takes audiences on Moana’s journey to find herself but we get to follow along on Maui’s as well.

Moana is Brave
I’m a big fan of girl power and the Walt Disney Animation Studios has really upped their girl power game in the last few years. Starting with Rapunzel from Tangled and on to Frozen and now Moana the heroine in the story is a strong, smart, brave girl that doesn’t rely on anyone else but herself and I dig that.

The Comedy
Laughing is the key to life! Moana is full of huge heart, but it’s also full of some really great family friendly comedy too. I laughed out loud!

The Soundtrack
Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame really found and captured the heartbeat of the story of Moana. I adore the music so much and so will you.

The Rock…I mean Maui
He has an ever-loving, charming, supersized ego and you will love him!

Moana is in theaters nationwide now!
